The New General Safety Regulation for Vehicles in Europe
After several years of intense consultation and development, the new European General Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, was finally published in the Official Journal of the European Union in December 2019. This Regulation repeals its predecessor, (EC) No. 661/2009, and represents arguably the most significant upheaval of vehicle safety requirements to hit Europe in the last decade.
The new Regulation introduces a raft of changes and brings into scope many new requirements. Over a period of seven years we will see the introduction of new UN ECE Regulations for European vehicles as well as extensions to the scope of existing UN ECE Regulations. Mandatory fitment of innovative features will be required for which new Regulations will need to be developed.
Come back over the next few weeks as I look into the key features of the Regulation, summarising the changes and examining the impact the new requirements may have as they are phased in from 2022 to 2029.
